I went to the movies with my sister and my niece last weekend and we both ordered pop to drink. Actually, I ordered a water and when my niece wanted more popcorn, I went back and I gave in to sweet, syrupy temptation. In the past six months or so, I've cut back on my pop intake. I don't even keep any in my fridge anymore. And if I did drink a pop, it would be diet. Now, I'm committing to drinking NO pop for the 40 days of Lent. Wow, this is going to be tough.

It's a decision my sister and I made after we went to the movies. She gave up pop completely for the last six months, but she had occasional slips. I can't remember a day that has gone by in a long time when I didn't drink at least one pop a day. About ten years ago, I was drinking at least three a day. I was also younger ten years ago, I digress. I know I wrote about my love/hate relationship with water, but honestly, I'd rather drink water than just about anything else these days.

I'm also challenging myself because anyone can participate in Lent, even if he or she is not Catholic. I have two friends who always give up pop, sweets, and breads, but not pasta every year for Lent. I probably could've tried this sooner and attempted to give up smoking which I did end up doing a little over three years ago. The ultimate goal is to give up pop beyond 40 days; it scares me.

I'll update everyone on my progress. I will need all the encouragement I can get!
