Daviess County Schools to commemorate Veterans Day This Week

Schools throughout the Daviess County Public Schools distirct are planning a variety of events to commemorate Veterans Day (November 12 national celebration) and express appreciation to the men and women who have served our country and protected our freedoms. The following are among the activities taking place in our schools, LISTED BY DATE. These events are open to the public.

BCHS is hosting Kirk Kirkpatrick as guest speaker for its Veterans Day programs on Nov. 1. The morning program begins at 10:30 a.m. and the afternoon program starts at noon. A barbecue luncheon for veterans and special guests is also planned at 11:20 a.m. The formal programs will include the presentation of colors by the Apollo High School Air Force JROTC Color Guard, the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem performed by BCHS students and staff. Principal Tony Bryant will read a Presidential Proclamation. Kirkpatrick, whose father was a former prisoner of war, is president of WaxWorks and is an active member of the Daviess County community.Sorgho Elementary School                          Laura Cecil

SES has invited all veterans to be honored guests at our Veterans Day celebration, which begins at 9 a.m. Nov. 5. Congressman Brett Guthrie is the special guest speaker. The Apollo High School JROTC and Drill Team will post the colors and perform a military drill. Third-students will sing and a Veterans Day skit will be performed by students in grades 4-5. SES teacher Misty Miller will be guest soloist for this celebration.  SES student leaders will be taking part in this special program. Sorgho is also hosting a special lunch on Nov. 5 honoring veterans and commemorating Election Day. The lunchline and cafeteria will be decorated.

AES presents “Our Salute to America!” at 1 p.m. Nov. 5 in the school gym. All veterans are invited to attend.

Apollo is hosting its ninth annual Veterans Day celebration starting with a Veterans Breakfast at 7:45 a.m. Nov. 7, followed by a special program.

DCMS will host Col. Larry Abel at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 7, sharing his experiences as a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving with the 101^st Airborne Divison in Vietnam. Among Abel’s military awards are the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters, Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. Abel also served with the Army Reserve and retired from the Kentucky State Police. The program will also feature Boy Scout Troop 120; special music by the eighth-grade band, directed by David Ruckdeschel; and soloist Jacob Johnson, a junior at Daviess County High School.

Tamarack is hosting an appreciation reception at 12:45 p.m. Nov. 7, welcoming veterans with ties to the school, its students and staff. The program will feature a Parade of Heroes and assembly at 1:15 p.m. in the school gym as the entire student body pays tribute to those who have served our country. Nick Hetman, veteran of the U.S. Navy and former pesident of the Tamarack PTO, will be the guest speaker. Other highlights include performances by Brian Jackson and the Tamarack Singing Stars Chorus.

DPES is hosting a breakfast for veterans at 7 a.m. Nov. 9, followed by a schoolwide assembly at 8:30 a.m., featuring a slideshow of pictures of honored veterans and a guest speaker.

WLES is hosting a breakfast starting at 7 a.m. Nov. 9 honoring veterans followed by a program at 8 a.m. featuring the Apollo High School Air Force JROTC, patriotic music and special guests. Chris Armburst, parent of a WLES student, will pilot an Apache helicopter and land on the school grounds, with an opportunity for students to have their photographs taken with the helicopter and servicemen. A military Humvee may also be part of the display (if available).

SOES will host a breakfast for veterans from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Nov. 9, followed by an assembly featuring performances by Southern Oaks students. “This is America: A Celebration of Our Country” is a musical exploring our country from the Founding Fathers to the global influence the USA is today. The musical is designed to celebrate the things that make America great, unique and diverse. Students from the Stallion Singers will perform and  selected students from the fourth- and fifth-grades will be among the speakers.

CVMS is hosting a special breakfast at 8 a.m. Nov. 9 in the media center honoring special guests, followed by a schoolwide assembly with master of ceremonies Petty Officer Jonathan McMurry (husband of CVMS teacher Deanna McMurry). Guest speaker is Command Sgt. Major Wayne St. Louis of the 101^st Airborne Division. The CVMS chorus will sing the National Anthem and the student body will recognize each branch of service as their song is being played. A trumpet player will perform “Taps” as fall veterans are remembered. The program concludes with a slideshow of veterans with CVMS connections.

BES is hosting a Veterans Day assembly at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 9, with guest speaker Sheriff Keith Cain, a veteran of the U.S. military. Classes will make a special presentation to veterans in attendance and the Bobcat Chorus will perform.

WES is hosting a veterans’ breakfast at 7 a.m. Nov. 12, followed by an appreciation ceremony at 7:45 a.m.

The DCHS Navy JROTC will conduct a brief ceremony, which begins at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 12 in the gymnasium. DCHS is hosting Nicholas Hetman, senior attorney for Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline, as guest speaker.

East View is hosting “A Tribute to Our Troops” at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 12. First-graders will sing patriotic songs, including “God Bless the USA” and “All-American, You and Me,” and will recognize each area of military service. Cookies and drinks will be served at 12:30 at a reception honoring all veterans in attendance. The program will also feature a slideshow of EVES family members who are veterans.

HES will celebrate America’s veterans and show appreciation for their dedication in keeping our country “the land of the free and the home of the brave” with a Veterans Day program starting at 1 p.m. Nov. 13. All veterans who are relatives of HES students are invited for the reception and assmebly. A Veterans March begins at 1 p.m. with guest speaker Clay Taylor, U.S. Army (retired), a former AH-64 Apache helicopter pilot who served in Iraq. The DCHS Air Force JROTC Color Guard will present the colors, and Highland students will perform a special patriotic musical selection.
