Fiber is Your Friend! [Choosing Joy]
Okay, so it has taken me a long time to work up the courage to discuss this topic with my Choosing Joy friends. But, I know in my heart that I am not the only one out there that struggles with this issue and so it is time to get a little personal.
No one likes to talk about it, but raise your hand if you suffer from difficulty in the bathroom, specifically with healthy, frequent bowl movements. It is nothing to be embarrassed about, but it is definitely not something to be ignored! I will go ahead and admit, especially since this third baby, things were just not moving like they should. So, like a good Media Specialist, I went to the public library and checked out the only book on their shelf about constipation, Cure Constipation Now! The title is hysterical and makes the advice inside seem like a scam, but let me testify right here, this book changed my mind, my habits, and my life!
I highly recommend borrowing the book from the library or me or purchasing it online. I found copies online so I bought two so that I could loan them out. However, the basic charge of the book is that we need to get serious about eating good sources of fiber. We need the fiber that comes from cereals and grains, insoluble fiber. This is why stuffing myself with salad after salad wasn’t improving my situation. I needed a new best friend, BRAN! However, insoluble fiber is serious stuff so it is crucial that we increase our fiber intake slowly and maybe temporarily help things along with a gentle, non-habit forming laxative like milk of magnesia. With time and consistency, all the tummy issues disappear! Praise God!
The author of the book is Dr. Wes Jones, a gastroenterologist from North Carolina. He is also a missionary traveling around the world to perform free medical care in the name of the gospel. Below you will find a video interview of him talking about his book and his travels.
“LORD my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me.” Psalm 30:2 (NIV)
I believe that God lead me to this book because He wants me to be healed and to bring glory to His Name through this story. I pray that you all will be blessed by it!
Next week I will share with you all some tips I have found to easily get more good fiber into your family’s diet, and your kids won’t even notice!
