I recently met some people who inspired me to camp more. Then I watched Wild starring Reese Witherspoon and though she had a whole big set of problems that I don't have, the thought of being closer to nature inspired me to introduce my daughter to camping. So, first thing's first - research. Here are some local spots I found that are perfect for the novice or advanced camper.

New Harmony, IN

With everything from cabins, to hiking and biking trails to even a bath house, Harmonii State Park offers a TON of camping amenities and even things like winery tours, a museum and cultural activities and festivals within ten miles of the park. A great place to camp overnight or more.

Boonville, IN

I was recently introduced to the beach at Scales Lake. After our day at the beach, I decided to drive through the park. Aside from the campground there are also small secluded areas for campers, as well as, a petting zoo, picnic areas, and cabins.

Henderson, KY

If you've never been to Audubon State Park, do yourself a favor and take your entire family out this afternoon for a gander at the absolutely gorgeous amenities this park in Henderson offers. While you are camping, you can enjoy hiking, fishing, rental boating, a nature center, a museum and even golf and wifi! It's truly camping made for the 21st century!

Evansville, IN

Whether you are camping with kids or adults only, you'll love the amenities at Burdette Park. You can enjoy fishing, BMX racing, miniature golfing, tennis courts and even a huge pool! It's one of the west side's best kept secrets to summer fun!

Owensboro, KY

Now, if you are looking for a beautiful natural setting with a lot to do, you have to put Diamond Lake on your summer bucket list. Not only does Diamond Lake offer primitive or RV camping but there are also motel rooms available. Not to mention three Go-Kart tracks, pedal boards, swimming pool, a laundry facility, entertainment theatre, grocery store and even a restaurant. It's like a whole little camping town. It's beautiful and the owners of Diamond Lake are wonderful people who accompanied two of our DJs on a 300-mile bike track from Memphis, TN, to Owensboro, KY, to raise awareness and donations for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Yep, they are good people.

So, if you are in the mood to rough it or rent a cabin and use the amenities, check out these fine local camp grounds. You won't be sorry!
