The first Kentuckian to win Miss America is throwing her sash into the political arena. Heather French Henry has filed a letter of intent to run for Kentucky Secretary of State.

The Democrat, originally from Augusta, has filed and to raise and spend money on the race with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance.

Henry still has to file paperwork to be on the 2019 ballot; the deadline to file is next Tuesday.

Democrat incumbent Alison Lundergan Grimes is term-limited out, which means the office will be open in the state's off year elections.

In 2014, Henry was appointed by then Governor Steve Beshear as the state commissioner of veteran affairs. Her platform when she served as Miss America was raising awareness for homeless veterans.

The 2000 Miss America is married to former Lt. Governor and Daviess County native Steve Henry.
