Hastily written emails can really show our true colors.  During the day, I get to be a School Librarian.  I love my job!  I love working with kids and teachers.  I love being around books and learning new things.  I even love all the interruptions and the crazy busy schedule!  The one thing that is not always fun is dealing with salespeople.

This week in particular, I had a complaint with a company that advertises proudly on its webpage about their amazing service, but with whom I have had less than great experiences.  It is past time to renew our school magazine subscriptions, but I was having trouble contacting my representative and navigating their website.

In my frustration, I wrote a scathing email about how I would be canceling my account because of their negligence and ineffectiveness.  I explained that I am much too busy to have to chase down my account representative every year and stumble around on their ugly website and that if they did not want my business that there are plenty of other companies who would love to replace them.

Just as I was about to hit Send, I remembered 2 Corinthians 10:5 again.

We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (NIV)

Were the thoughts of that email going to show my obedience to Christ?  Absolutely not.  Rather, they were showing my impatience, my rudeness, and my lack of self-control.  So, I held down the backspace button, closed my email, and shut down the computer for the day.  Salespeople are just people.  We are all busy and we all need grace, especially from each other.

The next morning, in my inbox was an email from my account representative sent at 6:45AM.  It included everything I needed to set up my renewals, peacefully.  I am so thankful that God and the Holy Spirit through His Word stopped me from sending that offensive email the day before.  Praise God for the delete button!
