For inspiration go online and search for fall scenes using words like, Fall Yard Display with pumpkins and mums. If you love Pinterest, like I do that is a great source of ideas, as well. - Jackie McCarthy

A bale of straw makes a great base for the display. Straw bales can be purchased from Even Steven Market on Hwy 56 and Hwy 81 for $5.99 each. The store also has a variety of pumpkins ranging in price $1.99 - 9.99 each.

Another option for pumpkins is the Glenmary Pumpkin and Mum sale at 3201 Bittel Road in Owensboro, KY. Choose mums, straw and pumpkins, all proceeds support Glenmary Home Missions now through October 31, 2014.

Now you need a scarecrow to preside over your harvest scene! Find some old jeans and a plaid shirt, fasten all the buttons and gather some old newspapers. Crumple the papers and begin stuffing them into the pants legs until they are full. Now using safety pins, attach the plaid shirttail to the waistband of the jeans and stuff the shirt. The newspapers will need to be stuffed tightly to give your scarecrow the ability to remain upright. Now you decide, headless? or what kind of head? I have made both. A plastic orange candy bucket with the carved pumpkin look works well.

A brown paper sack stuffed with crumpled newspapers and rubber banded or tied at the opening makes a great head and can be drawn on. If you use the bag, then you need to draw on triangle eyes and a mouth. Jagged teeth can make your friend scary or a traditional carving makes him or her appear whimsical. If you can find a stick of wood to place in the ground behind the bale this can support the scarecrow. I have a table and chairs on my porch so my scarecrow often sits in one of my chairs.

Now drive the stick into the ground and secure your scarecrow to the stick with rope so he doesn't fall over. Now spread the pumpkins and mums around the bale.

Happy Fall Ya'll!
