I normally don't write a lot about food which is shocking because Lord knows I eat way too much, but this subject came to my attention whilst browsing through all the "National Days" for October.

Fall, although Mother Nature is trying to trick us into thinking it's still Summer right now, is a prime time for all kinds of apples. I've never been known to turn down a slice or two of apple pie. But what about Apple Betty? I know it as Apple Brown Betty. Some folks call it Apple Crisp.

October 5th is National Apple Betty Day. By the way, here's one take on the recipe:

The dish, which is just short a crust of being labeled a pie or a cobbler, originated in America during colonial times. The first time the recipe was printed was in 1864. And the other well-known fact about the dessert is that it was a favorite of the Reagans during their time in the White House.

Slap some whipped cream or vanilla ice cream on top of that and I'm ready to go. I just need Fall to get its act together.
