Who doesn't enjoy a good piece of Derby-Pie? It's basically a glorified pecan pie, only the filling consists of a bourbon and chocolate chip mix with a hard nut top and pastry crust. What I didn't know is that the lauded dessert has a registered trademark. Take a look at the story of the Derby-Pie® at Kern's Kitchen in Louisville.

Kern's has sued several Kentucky restaurants that claim to serve a "derby-pie", including the Science Hill Inn in Shelbyville and the White Lightning Diner in Frankfort. They either call it chocolate pecan pie, which is what I think of a derby pie as, or Kentucky Bourbon Pie. This is just silly, but Kern's wants to protect the trademark.

What's your derby-pie recipe and/or story? Have you ever been served a cease and desist letter for your derby-pie?
