An alleged incident involving a 10-year-old girl whose lunch was taken away from her and dumped in the trash in front of other classmates because of a past-due account has created a firestorm and spurred a petition about school meal policies.

The girl's aunt works for Bedford Elementary PTO in Bedford and was at the school when an employee told her that the girl's lunch was taken from her while she was sitting in the cafeteria with her friends.

The girl was given a cheese sandwich after the original lunch was tossed.

That's cold comfort for an outraged family that says they have plenty of money to cover the account. They just didn't realize it was past due.

Another parent, Kim Wright, has started a petition aimed to address issues regarding lunch account policies.

Trimble County school board officials will meet with the public in June to discuss the incident.
