Earth Day is Saturday so I wondered. How "green" is our great state? How do we rank against other states? It's not so good.

We are known for our Bluegrass, Bourbon, Horse Racing, Chicken, Tobacco and Basketball, but just how "Green" is Kentucky?

Do you recycle? No judgement here as I'm not very good either. Do you use pesticides and fertilizer on your lawn? Do you watch your water consumption? I think we can all admit that we could do more to help our environment.

WalletHub’s analysts compared the 50 states across three key metrics to determine which states with Greenest and Least Eco-friendly: 1) Environmental Quality, 2) Eco-Friendly Behaviors and 3) Climate-Change Contributions.

I wish I could say Kentucky ranked higher in this study, but we have a lot of work to do!

Greenness of Kentucky (1=Greenest, 25=Avg.):

  • 36th – Air Quality
  • 18th – Soil Quality
  • 37th – Water Quality
  • 45th – LEED-Certified Buildings per Capita
  • 41st – % of Energy Consumption from Renewable Sources
  • 38th – Energy Consumption per Capita
  • 33rd – Gasoline Consumption (in Gallons) per Capita
