LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Nathan Smith was one of the first people to enter a new Fayette County treatment court for people with a diagnosed mental illness.

During a recent court hearing, Smith told a judge that he had been "clean" for 57 days, the Lexington Herald-Leader reports. The judge replied it was about the best he had ever seen Smith look. The courtroom clapped as Smith grinned.

Participants in the treatment court agree to a two-year diversion program that focuses on treatment and recovery instead of jail time.

It is one of four courts in Kentucky that focuses on treatment instead of jail time for people with mental illness, the newspaper reports.

In its first eight months, 21 people enrolled in the diversion program. Eighteen were still in the program in early December.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Several teens were turned away from a suburban Louisville mall on the first day the shopping center began a new chaperone rule.

The Courier-Journal reports that the new policy at Mall St. Matthews requires teens and pre-teens to have an adult escort during certain hours. The rule was put in place following a disturbance at the popular mall a week ago.

The restriction requires teens under the age of 18 to have adult supervision after 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Saturday was the first day the new program went into effect.

Signs placed prominently about the mall informed customers about the so-called Parental Guidance Required program. Security officials were stationed at each of the mall's public entrances.

The chaperone rule also went into effect at Oxmoor Center.
