According to dispatch, Kentucky State Police Post 16 was notified around 2:30am this morning of an officer involved shooting within the Henderson city limits.

The preliminary investigation suggests that Henderson City Police attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation.  However, the vehicle reportedly fled from the patrol officer and a pursuit followed.  That pursuit involved Clay, MLK and South Adams Streets in Henderson.

According to the police report, the operator of the fleeing vehicle stopped his car between Clay and South Adams Street and exited his vehicle with a shotgun.  This is a residential area of Henderson and a brief standoff then occurred between the operator and an Henderson Police Department officer.  Authorities claim that, during the standoff, the operator took a stance which created a safety concern for the police officer. The officer then fired his service weapon at the suspect. According to a news release by the Kentucky State Police, the suspect was struck multiple times in the abdomen and was quickly treated by Henderson EMS.  The officer involved was not injured in the incident.

The suspect was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville where he is listed in stable condition.

Investigators with the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team are investigating the shooting and more details will be released as soon as they are clear.
