Kentucky’s Real ID Overhaul Gets Another Extension

The Department of Homeland Security has granted Kentucky another extension to comply with Real ID enforcement. 

Kentucky now has until October 10th at which time state officials will ask for an additional extension that will give the state until January 2019. The Real ID Act was passed in 2005 intended to beef up security in wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

Earlier this year, the state passed a law allowing Kentucky citizens to purchase a voluntary travel ID that would replace a standard driver's license. A regular driver's license will no longer be allowed for passage into federal facilities, such as military bases, or nuclear power plants. The travel ID will also be needed to board a domestic flight beginning in January next year.

Since the extension has been granted the travel ID won't be available for existing driver's licenses until January 2019. More information on Kentucky's licensing procedures can be found HERE.
