We have already said goodbye to our Sears store inside Towne Square Mall in Owensboro.  And, now, the chain has announced it's closing additional Sears and Kmart locations throughout the nation.  In fact, five Kmart stores in Kentucky are shutting their doors.  Are the Owensboro stores going to survive the newest round of cuts?

68 Kmart stores nationwide will close and, according to an announcement last week by the chain, 5 of those stores will be in Kentucky.  Despite the fact that Owensboro has two Kmart locations within 3 miles of each other, our stores will not be affected for now. Thank goodness!  I live near the Kmart on West Parrish Avenue.  I have friends who work there. We have some devoted WBKR listeners who work there.  We want them to be able to keep their jobs.  And, for selfish reasons (like the fact that that's where I buy my tennis balls every week), I want it to remain open.  And, thankfully, it will!

According to Business Insider, the stores that will be affected are:

Kmart: 1809 N Dixie Hwy., Elizabethtown

Kmart: 4025 Poplar Level Rd., Louisville

Kmart: 3911 Taylorsville Rd., Louisville

Kmart: 1581 US 68 South, Maysville

Kmart: 344 North Mayo Trail, Paintsville

Two Kmart locations in Indiana will be affected as well.  Stores in Bloomington and New Albany are set to close their doors as well.
