It's hard to believe but it's been two years since Lynn Winter closed her popular and very unusual restaurant in Louisville. Since then, businesses in the area (Barrett Ave) have seen reduced foot traffic and last week, vandals made their mark on one of the statues. Despite all the drama surrounding whether or not Winter will sell, she's offering up a couple of her most popular recipes, including her Bourbon Ball French Toast.

Here it is!

Bourbon Ball French Toast

Bourbon pecan custard

4 1/4 cups milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

2/3 cup sugar

10 egg yolks

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup chopped, toasted pecans

1/3 cup bourbon

French toast

4 1-inch thick slices of your favorite homemade bread

4 eggs

1 cup milk

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

In a double-boiler, scald the milk and vanilla. Allow to cool until no longer steaming hot. In a separate bowl, beat the sugar, egg yolks, and salt. Then, with the double-boiler over medium heat, very slowly stir egg mixture into the cooled milk. Put the double-boiler back over the simmering water and cook the custard slowly, whisking constantly until it begins to thicken. Custard must not be allowed to boil. (If you think the custard has become too hot, pour into a large iced bowl and whisk it quickly, put it in a blender at low speed, covered, to cool rapidly.)

Remove from heat and keep whisking until mixture is cool. Stir in the pecans and bourbon. The custard should be prepared a day in advanced and be used within 3 days. Store it in the refrigerator. This makes custard for 6-10 slices.

Cut each slice of bread in half diagonally. Dip bread in the batter made from a mixture of the eggs, milk, and cinnamon. The bread slices should soak up all of the egg mixture. Grill slowly in a greased skillet until the toast is golden brown on both sides.

Spoon custard over hot French toast. Serves 6-10.

Top with chocolate sauce and whipped cream, if desired, and garnish with fresh strawberries.
