Have you ever spoken with a ghost? Many people dismiss the idea of life after death on earth and even more wouldn't claim to hold conversations with apparitions, spirits, and the dead. But, one of Newburgh's Ghost Walk ghostly guides visited us in the studio to share his tale. Luckily, we caught it on video below!

In all seriousness, the Newburgh area boasts a rich history - much of it resulting in tragedy and folklore of hauntings. Historic Newburgh Inc. hosts annual Ghost Walks that allow residents and visitors to walk the streets of Newburgh and listen to historical recollections of these tragic tales.

The land, now known as the Town of Newburgh, was first settled by John Sprinkle in 1803.  So it should be no surprise that over the years there have been some pretty unusual things happen.  All stories were originally written with research done from old newspaper articles.  As people became aware of the Ghost Walks, they shared their family legends.  As you walk around Newburgh and listen to the tales, there may be a few embellishments, but for the most part, the stories are all true!

The 23rd annual Historic Newburgh Ghost Walks will run Friday, October 14th, 6:00pm-9pm; Saturday, October 15th, 5pm-9pm; and Sunday, October 16th, 5pm-8:00pm.  The guided walking tours depart Preservation Hall (200 State Street) and each tour lasts about an hour.  Tour guides take groups of 18- 20 out for the walking tour every 12 minutes. As you walk along the sidewalks you will meet Ghosts of Newburgh’s past, who will share their tragic life; as well as, stories of life in Newburgh.

There are two tours to choose from.  On the Water Street tour, attendees will learn of river lore and some of our family mysteries.  The State Street tour focuses on Civil War tales and the homes along State Street and East Jennings.  Both tours offer their share of history, Newburgh style.

Advance tickets are on sale now at $8.00. Advance ticket sales close at 5 pm Thursday, October 13. Tickets are $10 at the door.  This is a great outing for groups!  You may purchase tickets by calling Historic Newburgh, Inc. at (812) 853-2815 or going to our website of historicnewburgh.org to purchase your tickets on-line.
