A big congratulations and THANK YOU is due our very courageous members of the Owensboro Fire Department who have recently been recognized on a national level.

The National Association of State Fire Marshals, Fire Research, and Education Foundation in conjunction with Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company have presented the OFD with a Life Safety Achievement Award.

Mayor Tom Watson made the announcement Tuesday.

Only 160 fire departments in the entire country received this recognition, and Owensboro's was one of them.

The press release from the City of Owensboro went on to say that the award was for efforts in community based fire prevention and fire safety education programs in 2016.

One of the NASFM's main points in the presentation was the OFD's continued efforts to encourage citizens to install and maintain smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Many of the OFD's safety education programs were cited.

We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Owensboro's brave firefighters and we're proud of all of them for this extraordinary recognition.
