The son of a coaching legend is joining new WKU football coach Mike Sanford's staff next season.

Steve Spurrier Jr. spent this past season as Oklahoma's director of high school recruiting and as an offensive assistant. He spent 11 years prior at South Carolina when his father was head coach as a wide receivers coach, and eventually becoming the recruiting, passing game, and offensive coordinator. He also coached with his Dad at Florida. He played college football at Duke. His official role with the staff has yet to be determined, but he will more than likely serve as an on-field offensive assistant.

Sanford has also named to his staff former WKU linebacker and assistant coach Jami DeBerry, and North Carolina State and former WKU special teams coach Clayton White. White has been named the new Topper defensive coordinator. DeBerry is a native of Franklin KY.

Mike Sanford was named Western's 20th football coach last Wednesday. Sanford, who left Notre Dame where he was offensive coordinator, coached alongside Willie Taggart at WKU in 2010. He will be the youngest head coach (34) in FBS at the start of 2017.
