One of the many things I love about road trips on back roads is the general store. If I'm lucky, I'll find one of these roadside gems at lunchtime then treat myself to a store-made sandwich. I know it doesn't sound fancy, but who wants that?

But it's not just the sandwich counter.

General stores hit home runs when they also feature things like homemade or home-crafted items, small books about local history or points of interest, and, of course, a checkerboard on a great big barrel next to two rocking chairs.

Now, whether or not you find the checkerboard, the barrels, and the chairs at any of the ten Kentucky general stores that OnlyinYourState has selected remains to be seen.

But if you DO happen to be in McQuady, McDaniels, Horse Branch, Falls of the Rough or any of the other towns whose general stores made this list, I'd stop by and find out if I were you.

You can't go wrong, regardless.
