I know several people, members of my own family included, who would rather text than call in most given situations. We're a texting society now. And 911 seems to be catching up.

The big three cell service providers--AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon--are preparing to activate a text to 911 service, according to 911 director Paul Nave. They are awaiting the go ahead from the dispatch center.

There will be a 911 board meeting in March, after which the dispatch center should be ready to go with regards to accepting text 911 messages.
