I was 11 years old and happened to be watching TV. In 1977, August 16th was still summer vacation. I wouldn't start sixth grade for another week and a half.

That big, ominous screen card that read SPECIAL REPORT or BREAKING NEWS--something like that--appeared, so I stayed put to see what it was.

Elvis Presley, the King of Rock 'n' Roll, had died at the age of 42.

Even at 11, I knew that was huge.

But it was a surprise because that was 1977 and LOOOONG before the Internet and social media.

There were no tabs kept on Elvis' health or various drug issues like there would be today.

This was a total shock.

The biggest star in music history was dead.

Since that time, there have been tributes on the milestone anniversaries of his birth and death.

Today is, unbelievably, the 40th anniversary of his passing.

Mine happens to be a song written about Kentucky by a guy(Eddie Rabbitt) from New Jersey and sung by the legendary icon from Mississippi who made his home in Tennessee.
