It was announced today that Owensboro will be part of the the new North American Premier Basketball League (NAPB) for the 2018 season! YOU have a chance to pick the Team Mascot.

This afternoon, at the Owensboro Sportscenter, the announcement was made that the city will host a pro basketball team in 2018 and we couldn’t be more excited about it! Games will begin at the first of January and run through April with the playoffs starting in May.

The team color, name and mascot haven't been determined yet because YOU get to decide! Go to http://owensborobasketball.com/ and submit your selection.

I'll admit that I submitted the "Honey Bee" as it's our State Insect. Couldn't very well submit the State Bird could I ???!!

David Magley, president of the league, was on hand to make the announcement. David is a retired basketball player and coach. He was named Indiana Mr. Basketball and was a fifth pick in the second round of the 1982 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He knows basketball and said, it was an easy choice to come to Owensboro because of the people, the venue and the city. His decision was cemented when he made a trip to watch the Mavericks play the Bootleggers and saw the community support and excitement! He also added that we can expect BIG things!

Magley also stressed that they are dedicated to including valuable programming for local communities, particularly schools from the elementary to high school levels. Programs on their website, include players reading to younger children, hosting basketball camps for teens, and speaking in school-wide assemblies about substance abuse and staying in school.

NAPB Combines are being held in big cities all over the country to get the best basketball players available.

Mayor, Tom Watson was also on hand. He said, the storied tradition of the Owensboro Sportscenter makes it the perfect venue for games and then he welcomed the team to town!
