Evansville's Most Infamous Camper

It was a warm day in the summer of 2022 when someone spotted something curious in the middle of the Ohio River, a camper.  The camper which was notoriously nicknamed the "Poon Saloon"  appeared on a pumpout one day and had many perplexed, as it brought a good laugh to the city.  Somehow someone floated a camper out to a temporary sandbar that appears every time they dredge the bottom of the river.  Of course, as you can imagine, photos of this camper quickly went viral on Facebook.

All Good Things Must Come to an End

Eventually, the temporary sandbar begin to go away, and the "Poon Saloon" began taking on water.  On July 29th many people watched the EvansvilleWatch livestream of the infamous camper being swept away to its final resting place, the bottom of the Ohio River.   You can see highlights of this devastating loss below (I recommend playing Celine Dion's 'My Heart Will Go On' softly while watching).

Poon Saloon Lives On

There's no denying that this camper had an absolute chokehold on our city, and it's fair to see why, it was something strange, but also not super serious (at least to us spectators, I can't speak for the legal system here).  Evansville Aerial recently shared something on Facebook that made me laugh out loud when I saw it.  It turns out, of all the weeks for Google to take new Google Maps satellite images, they chose the week of the infamous sandbar camper to update the imagery over Evansville.

I decided to check and see if it showed up on my end, and it did! When you first go to the satellite view you'll see this:

In the lower part of the photo sits something interesting on the sandbar.  Let's zoom this bad boy in one more time.

And there she is! The most infamous camper in Evansville history, forever immortalized on Google Maps satellite images. A big thank you to Evansville Aerial for catching this!
