Members of Sam's Club in Indiana and Kentucky will soon be saying goodbye to the cashier experience and hello to Scan & Go on their phones.

Welcome to the Future of Sam’s Club

Sam's Club, the membership-only club owned and operated by Walmart, is planning a massive overhaul to how it operates its nearly 600 stores nationwide. The company is branding the changes as convenience and efficiency for their shoppers.

Why Sam’s Club Is All In on This Tech

In December 2024, Sam's Club opened the doors to a "First-of-Its-Kind" store in Grapevine, Texas. The company touted the store as a "glimpse into the future of Sam's Club." What sets this store apart from the hundreds of others across the country is its lack of employee-run cash registers or self-checkout kiosks.

No Cashiers, No Problem?

In a press release, the retailer says that the new shopping experience has been met with "enthusiasm."

One of the most exciting features of the remodel is the transition to a register-free shopping experience. High-top tables near the showroom and entrance are staffed by member specialists ready to assist anyone new to Scan & Go. This innovative approach has been met with enthusiasm, with the majority of members preferring the streamlined system in its first week.

Where It’s Happening

In another press release dated April 11, 2025, the mega-box store shared its plans to expand the concept into its other stores across the country.

The retailer also plans to remodel all 600 of its existing clubs, with the newly opened Grapevine, Texas, location setting the standard for the club of the future.

Scan & Go: What It Is and How It Works

So, what is Scan & Go? The Sam's Club app has a Scan & Go option inside. Once selected, shoppers can scan each item they wish to purchase as they add it to their shopping cart. When users have finished their shopping, they can pay electronically through the app.
