I’ve Never Been to Illinois’s Oldest Restaurant—Here’s Why That Changes Today
The story of this iconic Illinois treasure starts with a five-cent beer and a free sandwich. Over a century later, it remains steeped in history, with every wall telling a piece of its incredible tale.
Illinois Eatery Named One of America's Most Fascinating Historic Restaurants
Illinois is filled with family-owned businesses, each with its unique story. But let's be honest: keeping the doors open is no easy feat. Many businesses celebrate milestones like a decade or even a generation of service. But how often do you find one that’s been thriving for 126 years?
That’s exactly the case for The Berghoff in Chicago, a restaurant that has been part of the Windy City’s dining scene since 1898.
Back then, patrons could get a beer for a nickel, with a FREE sandwich to boot. Imagine that kind of deal today.

The Berghoff: A First in Chicago History
Here’s a fun fact: The Berghoff holds Chicago’s very first liquor license.
When Prohibition hit in 1920, Herman Berghoff didn’t let the dry years close his doors. Instead, he started making "near beer" and soda to keep the business alive. Fast-forward to 1933, when Prohibition ended, and Herman snagged the first booze-selling license in town.
Cheers to that!
The Berghoff Today
According to the Berghoff historians, after briefly closing in 2006 to transition from the third to the fourth generation of ownership, The Berghoff reopened in 2007. Today, it’s a three-part experience: The Berghoff Bar, Restaurant, and Café, all housed in a sprawling 45,000-square-foot building at 17 W. Adams Street.
Over 125 years later, you'll have a difficult time finding more delicious German food and beers around the city of Chicago.
Time for a Pretzel and a Pint
With over a century of history and legendary Bavarian flavors, The Berghoff remains a must-visit. One day soon, I hope to be at the bar, beer in hand, diving into one of their famous Bavarian pretzels.
Prost!
