As illnesses continue to rise across Illinois, health officials are warning of the most common sicknesses spreading throughout the state.

Everywhere we go lately, we can't seem to escape the sound of others coughing, sneezing, runny noses, and people trying to shake off respiratory illnesses.

Now, Health officials are saying there are four illnesses amping up in Illinois you need to be cautious of: the flu, RSV, norovirus and COVID-19.

It's common to see a surge this time of year in the Midwest, but statewide, 20% of ER visits between December 29th and January 4th were attributed to respiratory illnesses.

If that wasn't enough, Norovirus is also sweeping across the state.

If you've had any of these symptoms, you might have the norovirus.

  • Feeling under the weather
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • A high fever
  • Major headache
  • Aching arms and legs

Here are a few ways to keep yourself healthy and reduce your chances of getting a nasty infection this cold and flu season.

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water - this has been one of the most effective ways to reduce the spread
  • Hand sanitizers are recommended to keep in your pocket, purse, on your keychain, or anywhere accessible if you can't wash your hands
  • Social distance as much as you can with others
  • Cover your coughs, sneezes, and carry tissues with you
  • Stay home when you feel ill or under the weather
  • Wear a mask when needed, it never hurts to be extra protected
