He Loves to Hunt in Illinois, But That Tree Stand Could Kill Him
As Illinois hunters gear up for the 2024 firearm deer season, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is emphasizing safety in the field, particularly when using tree stands.

Tree stands are the No. 1 cause of hunting-related accidents and fatalities in Illinois. This season alone, the Illinois Conservation Police have documented multiple serious injuries and one fatality involving tree stand falls.
The fatality occurred in Wayne County on Nov. 10, when a hunter fell from his stand after apparently nodding off. He was not wearing a safety harness.
Our top priority is ensuring hunters return home safe and unharmed after every hunt. We want hunters to enjoy themselves and be successful in the field, but safety must be top of mind at all times. -Jed Whitchurch, director of IDNR’s Office of Law Enforcement
Preventing Tree Stand Falls
Most tree stand accidents occur from heights of 20 to 30 feet, resulting in injuries like fractured vertebrae, concussions, and even paralysis.
IDNR recommends the following safety measures:
- Always use a fall arrest system with a safety harness.
- Inspect tree stand equipment for wear and tear before use.
- Avoid drugs and alcohol while hunting.
- Use a haul line to lift unloaded firearms or gear.
- Inform someone of your hunting location and expected return time.
Firearm Deer Season Highlights
The firearm deer season is one of the most anticipated times of the year for Illinois hunters. While IDNR celebrates the season’s role in conservation and outdoor recreation, they are doubling down on safety messaging this year to prevent further injuries.
“The consequences of falling from a tree stand can have a lasting impact on hunters and their loved ones,” Whitchurch added.
Hunters are encouraged to visit the IDNR website at dnr.illinois.gov/safety for more information on tree stand safety and hunting regulations. By taking precautions, hunters can ensure a safe and successful season.
