The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory in Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois. Temperatures will be in the 90s but because of the amount of rain we've been subjected to lately, the humidity will be off the charts. Heat + Humidity = Misery.

A Heat Advisory is in effect for portions of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western Kentucky, and southeast Missouri from noon CDT /1 PM EDT/ Saturday until 7 PM CDT /8 PM EDT/ Tuesday. During this period, heat index values are expected to reach between 100°F and 108°F, with little relief at night. The combination of high temperatures and humidity could potentially lead to heat-related illnesses. This will be the first prolonged stretch of intense heat and humidity this season, making the impacts more severe than usual.

Staying Cool During a Heatwave

There are some precautions you should take during a heatwave.

1. Stay indoors in air conditioning if you can. If you don't have access to A/C at your home, visit a public library or cooling center to beat the heat.
2. Drink plenty of fluids. Don't forget the electrolytes.
3. Stay out of the sun if you can. If you must be out in it, wear sunscreen and protective clothing.
4. Make sure outdoor animals have access to water and shelter from the sun.
5. Be aware of the symptoms of heat stroke, dehydration, and other heat-related illnesses. If you or someone you know is exhibiting signs of a heat-related illness seek medical treatment immediately.
