If you are a friend of mine, chances are, I have sent you a TikTok video that reminded me of you. Whether funny, heartfelt, or educational, I love scrolling through videos on the popular social media app.

What I DON'T love are the stupid trends that catch on from time to time. I guess that isn't necessarily TikTok's fault, though. Teens have been doing dumb stuff since the dark ages, I know I sure did, but when I heard about the newest "thing" floating around, I just had to share. Parents, teachers, teens, if you are reading this, be aware.

This week, Principal of Evansville's North Jr. High School, Jeff Sincroft, sent an email to parents of students to warn them after instances occurred inspired by the dangerous trend. Students are inserting objects like push pins, metallic gum wrappers, paper clips, and nails into ports on their laptops, attempting to cause a short that sets them on fire.

The main goal is to get a video of the chaos that ensues, whether it be creating sparks, smoke, or even causing school evacuations in some circumstances. The hashtags being used online are #Chromebookchallenge or #Chromebookdurabilitytest.

School officials are hoping word will spread faster than this trend, so any serious damage can be avoided. These laptops are not only school property, but putting lives in danger is too far. Students can expect consequences to match their behavior, as some are already facing suspension and expulsion in other states like Connecticut. One TikTok user claimed their school was issuing fines for ruined Chromebooks.

The moral of the story is: just don't. Oh, I have a good idea! Instead of arson, start a new trend that's helpful or kind. Like, organizing something for your teacher or complimenting your classmates. Make a candy salad or do a fun viral dance. That's the kind of content that gets major views online and you'll be making the world a better place.
