A Haircut And Lunar Phases Might Just Be Connected
I get my haircut every two weeks. Having any kind of length in my hair drives me nuts, so I keep it very short. I seriously look like an extra in the movie 300. When I sat down in the chair Monday morning at Creative Image, I mentioned to my hairdresser Michelle that, "My hair seemed to grow really fast the last two weeks."
Michelle, without missing a beat, said, "Maybe it was the new moon?"
WHAT IS A NEW MOON?

I didn't have a friggin' clue what she was talking about or insinuating. So, naturally, I asked.
She said, "You've never heard that? I have a few clients who schedule their haircuts around the new moon because they think it makes their hair grow faster."
Wait! What? Really?
DOES THE NEW MOON MAKE YOUR HAIR GROW FASTER?
So, for fun, we checked the date of my previous haircut. It was Monday, January 19th. I then asked Siri to tell me what night the new moon occurred that particular month. Believe it or not, she answered, "Sunday, January 18th!"
I had gotten my haircut at 9am, Monday, January 19th- just hours after the new moon. Now, look. There is zero doubt that my hair had grown faster. Michelle noticed immediately when she started to cut it. But is this really a thing? Can the moon affect how your hair grows?
As it turns out, this is a folklore that has been around for centuries. So, what's the established theory about hair growth as it relates to the new moon? According to Ocean Salon Systems, "It is believed that cutting your hair during the new moon and waxing phases (when the moon is growing) promotes faster and thicker hair growth."
Even The Old Farmer's Almanac has pages dedicated to this. The website even calculates the best day to cut your hair based on moon cycles. The website poses this question- Do you follow a lunar hair-cutting chart? Uh, no! Until a couple of days ago, I didn't even know there was such a thing.
I'm a relatively well-educated human being. I am inquisitive. I have a thirst for knowledge. So, why am I just now learning that Chi-nese.com believes that "The new moon is a time of renewal . . . and is the perfect time to cut away what feels heavy or damaged."
Okay, fine! But, this seems like a heckuva lot of work. Honestly, I imagine this is what it would feel like to monitor a reproductive cycle. In the words of Kimberly "Sweet Brown" Wilkins, "Ain't nobody got time for dat."
I'll just stick to my regularly scheduled program. Haircut. Every other Monday.
