Picture it. New Orleans circa 1991. I was on a business/pleasure trip in the Big Easy along with several radio colleagues from across the country. Before I found the rest of my contingent, I stopped in a little tavern not far from the hotel. That's when everything changed.

Yes, I know that's pretty dramatic, but brand new taste sensations can lead to some pretty dramatic reactions. Some are good, and some are bad. If memory serves, though, "great surprises" have a winning record over "I'll never eat that again."

Road Trips for Foodies

My New Orleans dining experience falls into the former category. I wish I could remember the name of the place because when you eat your very first fried pickle, the name of the joint should be etched in your memory. However, I've enjoyed amazing fried pickles many times since that wonderful introduction, and maybe that's why I don't recall the place.

The Toasted Pickle

I will have less trouble remembering The Toasted Pickle, and I've never even been. But I'm a pickle lover, and if the opportunity ever presents itself, you can find me there.

The Toasted Pickle Menu

So where ARE my Kentucky pickle lovers? Come on, you know you're thinking about how to plan a trip to Grand Haven MI to dine here while disguising the journey as something else. But foodies don't have "guilty pleasures." They go where the good food is. And The Toasted Pickle certainly fits the bill. Look at all this.

But doesn't this look good, too?

And, honestly, after perusing the menu and now seeing it, this looks like it would be my first selection. (Too bad it's currently out of stock.)

Listen, if you don't want to go JUST to eat at this unique, highly-rated eatery, understand that Grand Haven is ON Lake Michigan.

Formulating a vacation around THAT should be a no-brainer.
