Remembering the Mini Golf Course at Windy Hollow Lake in Owensboro, KY
This photo brings back so many memories. The folks at Windy Hollow Biscuit House shared the photo a few days ago on their official Facebook page. Evelyn Miller, who now owns Windy Holly Biscuit House with her daughter Hallie, has plenty of memories of growing up at Windy Hollow- the lake, campground and restaurant her family owned and operated in west Daviess County. Most everyone who grew up in this area has their own 'Windy Hollow' memories. I certainly do. In fact, I have one distinct memory of that particular miniature golf course.
I graduated from Daviess County High School in 1989. During our Senior Week festivities, we had our class picnic at Windy Hollow. Senior Week was the best really. We were about to graduate, so we got out of class a week early and spent that week having graduation practice and hanging out with our classmates in special 'senior' events. The picnic at Windy Hollow was one of them.
I don't remember much about the picnic other than playing multiple rounds of miniature golf with my friends. That photo above immediately transported me back there. The truth is- I spent a lot of time on that course even outside of Senior Week. My family used to camp at Windy Hollow occasionally and miniature golf was always a part of the fun.
It's quite clear- from the comments on Windy Hollow Biscuit House's Facebook post- that many people had similar experiences.
Greg West says, "My buddies and I used to go swimming in the lake and after that we played golf. It was great!"
Becky Atherton recalls, "My church youth group played on these courses many times. I am sure I put a few balls in the lake too."
Melinda Phillips used to play at Windy Hollow and Miller Lakes. She shared this. "Played many rounds at Miller Lakes growing up. And I worked the entry gate/golf course there for two years in college. Loved it!"
We all loved it. That photo dates back to the early 1970s, but it represents multiple generations of folks here in Daviess County who grew up spending time at the lake, with a putter and a golf ball in their hands.
