Here’s Why Balancing Deep and REM Sleep Matters More Than Getting 8 Hours
REM vs. Deep Sleep: Why You Need Both to Feel Your Best
It’s no lie that I have to adjust to a new sleep schedule very quickly, as I join the morning show. It’s said that 8 hours of sleep is what’s best for your body, but is that always true? Like today, for instance, I woke up willingly at 2am and thought to myself... Might as well just get up because my mind felt awake. It got me thinking, what is ACTUALLY important when it comes to our sleep patterns? Two key players in your nightly rest are deep sleep and REM sleep. Both are essential, but they serve very different purposes for your body and mind.
Lets Break it Down. What is significant about 'Deep Sleep'?
This is the stage where your body really gets to work healing and recharging. It usually occurs in the first half of the night, lasting about 1.5 to 2 hours. I know you're thinking that's it? That’s the time when you're not tossing and turning. During deep sleep, your body repairs tissues, strengthens your immune system, and releases growth hormones. All of those elements are what help you feel physically restored the next day.
What is different about REM Sleep?
This is the creative and fun part of sleep, it’s the dream stage. This is where your brain lights up and gets busy. REM (short for rapid eye movement) sleep happens mostly in the second half of the night and lasts around 90 to 125 minutes. It’s when your brain processes memories, regulates emotions, and boosts creativity. Basically, REM sleep is your mental and emotional reset.

Which one do I need?
Both! Deep sleep helps your body recover, while REM sleep keeps your brain sharp and your mood balanced. Most adults should aim for roughly two hours of deep sleep and about the same amount of REM sleep each night, though it can vary depending on your age and lifestyle.
So what's the verdict?
As much as I would love to get a full 8 hours of sleep each night, I also realize that is not realistic every night and cuts into my day a lot. So how can I still feel renewed without dragging the next day? When it comes to sleep, balancing both Deep and REM sleep is everything. Give your body and mind the rest they both deserve. True recovery happens when you get enough of both deep and REM sleep.
