Owensboro Native Eli Wright Transfers to WKU

Former Apollo standout Eli Wright has had quite the journey since his days in Owensboro. His latest stop? Western Kentucky University where he will be eligible to play this upcoming season. 

Here's a reminder of how powerful and versatile the 6'5" guard can be:

Wright finished his high school senior year at the 22ft Academy. He was then recruited along with former OHS standout, now Los Angeles Laker Aric Holman to attend Mississippi State under legendary head coach Ben Howland. A top recruit among many top recruits, Wright found himself competing for playing minutes his freshman season.

In his sophomore year with the Bulldogs, he did see a little more court time but he ultimately decided to transfer. He made the move to St. John's which at the time former St. John's star and NBA great Chris Mullin was the head coach. Unfortunately, transferring would mean Wright would have to sit his junior season. Another complication came when Mullin resigned from St. John's earlier this year.

Wright entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier this month. The Hilltoppers who retained 6'11" center Charles Bassey after he withdrew from June's NBA Draft, are in need of some additional boost. Seven players have transferred since the end of the season putting coach Rick Stansbury in a bit of a bind. Since he sat out last season, Wright will be able to play immediately for the Toppers as he has two years of eligibility left as long as he secures a waiver from the NCAA.
