When it comes to changing the way we all shop, the Walton family has long been at the forefront. Walmart goes without saying. Then came its indispensable spinoff, Sam's Club, to alleviate our bulk shopping issues. And now, what might end up being THE technological trademark of the 21st century is being employed by the retail giant.

Just as the origins of the Internet date back farther than many realize, so do the beginnings of discussions surrounding artificial intelligence, a term first uttered in 1955. Over the course of the last seven decades, it's mainly been a source of science fiction, up to and including the 2001 Steven Spielberg film A.I.

Twenty-three years later, AI is quickly becoming a part of everyday life, and there are Sam's Club shoppers who can attest to the fact. Social media went crazy when Walmart began checking receipts as customers departed, but now humans may no longer be CHECKING those receipts at Sam's Club.

Revealed in January, the company plans to use artificial intelligence combined with a new camera system to check patrons' receipts when they leave the store. Here's a demonstration of how it works.

Much like the way cameras are employed on highways to monitor a vehicle's speed, these new cameras will take a quick picture of your cart to make sure it matches up with everything on your receipt. And then you are on your way.

If your Sam's Club receipt hasn't yet been scanned by artificial intelligence, it's just a matter of time. In a recent press release, the company announced that all stores nationwide ill feature AI receipt scanning by the end of 2024.
