On Friday, June 17, the 102 employees at Owensboro Municipal Utilities Elmer Smith Generating Station will celebrate an important milestone and receive recognition for their commitment to safety.

During a luncheon event, OMU's ESS employees will receive the Kentucky Governor's Health and Safety award presented by Kentucky Labor Secretary Mark Brown.

Elmer Smith Station's full-time employees have not reported a lost time injury since January 2009 and have achieved in excess of 470,000 hours of safe operation.  The facility has previously earned the Governor's Award in 1997 and 2002.

"Reaching this milestone is a credit to our employees and reminder that we are dedicated to the safety of our employees and each other," explained Director of Power Production Kevin Frizzell.

"This recongition reinforces our commitment to the safety of our employees and our community," added OMU General Manager Stan Conn.

This award recongizes organizations for outstanding safety and health performance and encourages development of programs designed to reduce and even eliminate occupational injuries and illnesses.  The Governor's Safety and Health Award is given to employers and their employees, who together have achieved the minimum required number of hours worked without experiencing a lost-time injury or illness at their establishment.
