The Family Resource and Youth Services Centers of the Daviess County and Owensboro public schools districts are sponsoring a series of classes designed to support parents. 

All classes are free of charge and some are being offered more than once to accommodate parents’ schedules. The classes will be offered again during the Spring 2013 semester.

 The Fall 2012 schedule of classes includes the following opportunities: 

Becoming a Love and Logic Parent

8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 4 through Oct. 2 at Tamarack Elementary School, 1733 Tamarack Road – call 852-7561 to register. Childcare is not available. 

Becoming a Love and Logic Parent

5:45 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 4 through Oct. 2 at the DCPS Learning Center, 1700 Parrish Plaza Drive – call 852-7561 to register. Childcare will be provided. 

Getting Back to the Basics

5:15 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 16 through Nov. 20 at Owensboro Middle School South, 2631 S. Griffith Ave.  – call 686-1159 to register. Childcare will be available. 

Active Parenting for Parents, Step-Parents and Guardians

11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 17 through Nov. 14 at the DCPS Learning Center, 1700 Parrish Plaza Drive – call 852-7187 to register. Childcare is not available. 

Course descriptions are as follows: 

Becoming a Love and Logic Parent – This five-week program teaches a unique approach to parenting that is designed to put the adult in control while teaching children to be responsible for their own behaviors and to prepare them for the real world. Love and Logic is easy to learn, changes lives and produces responsible kids who are fun to be around. 

Getting Back to the Basics – These classes focus on helping children make good choices, communication strategies, discipline vs. punishment, effective daily parenting, parenting styles, and managing stress and anger. 

Active Parenting – This program provides instruction in peaceful negotiation skills, the power of encouragement, managing anger, conflict resolution, the impact of divorce on children, the role of the stepparent, and discipline in the stepfamily.

These classes are sponsored by the Family Resource and Youth Services Centers of DCPS and OPS, which are dedicated to providing support to families and serving as a liaison between families and community resources. 

In addition to these classes, the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support group meets from 5:30 to 7 p.m. the last Thursday of each month at Owensboro Middle School South, 2631 S. Griffith Ave. Advance registration is not required; call 686-1159 for more information.
