I have known Connie Morgan most of my life. When I was a student at Thruston Elementary School, she was our "gifted and talented" teacher and I was one of her students.

I met her husband George when I arrived at Daviess County High School. He taught ag there. Though I never had Mr. Morgan for class, I and everyone else in the school knew him. Since that time (and that's been thirty years, by the way), George has also taught at Owensboro Community and Technical College and Trinity High. Decades of students know him and that huge personality that earned him the nickname "Big George".

Here's something about Big George that you may not know. He is a dedicated supporter of and donor at the Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center here in Owensboro. Honestly, he was donating blood even before moving to Owensboro. Connie says "It's definitely something he believes in" and donated in Florida when the couple lived there.

George has been donating blood locally for years and has actually made 79 successful donations. Yes, that's right. He has donated 79 pints of blood and is incredibly close to reaching the 10 Gallon Club. Because of his dedication to Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center and the center's desire to do something to give back, they're partnering with Connie for the Big George Blood Drive.

That drive officially gets underway next week- on Monday, October 3rd- and the goal is to get 79 donors to donate in honor of George. However, the Big George Blood Drive got a bit of a head start yesterday when Jamison Hughes (a former DCHS student) stopped by the center and got the ball rolling early.

See, for the past ten months, George has been battling Multiple Myeloma. He was diagnosed in December of 2021.  Five months later, in May of '22, he was also diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Connie has been using Facebook to keep their friends and former students updated on his condition. Now, Connie "wants George to feel the love" and this is a great opportunity by supporting a cause that was near and dear to his heart.

If you'd like to donate in honor of George, visit the Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center on Old Hartford Road here in Owensboro,.

The center is open Monday through Thursday 8:30am-5:30pm and Fridays 8:30am-4:30pm.
