Kentucky clerk appeals order putting her in jail

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky county clerk has appealed a judge's decision to put her in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Attorneys for Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis officially appealed the ruling on Sunday. The three page motion does not include arguments as to why Davis should be released but amends Davis' earlier appeal of the judge's order.

Davis objects to same-sex marriage for religious reasons and stopped issuing all marriage licenses in June after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage. Two gay couples sued her. U.S. District Judge David Bunning ordered Davis to issue the licenses but she refused to do it saying she could not betray her conscience.

Bunning sent Davis to jail on Thursday for disobeying his order. Her deputy clerks then issued marriage licenses to gay couples Friday.

Kentucky clerk appeals her jailing over gay marriage

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A defiant county clerk in Kentucky is willing to stay in jail for her beliefs, but she would prefer to be a free woman.

Attorneys for Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis have officially appealed a judge's decision to put her in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The three-page motion doesn't include arguments as to why Davis should be released but amends Davis' earlier appeal of the judge's order.

Davis objects to same-sex marriage for religious reasons. U.S. District Judge David Bunning ordered her to issue the licenses and the U.S. Supreme Court upheld his order.

But Davis still refused to do it, saying she could not betray her conscience. Bunning then put her in jail for refusing to obey his order.

COACH-ABUSE CHARGE

Kentucky court session planned in former women's coach case

COVINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A pretrial conference is planned in the case of a former college women's basketball coach accused of groping a player.

The session has been scheduled for Tuesday morning in a Kenton County court for Bryce McKey. McKey's attorney has entered a not-guilty plea for him on a charge of third-degree sexual abuse, a misdemeanor.

Hours after his arraignment Aug. 14, the University of Maryland announced that he had resigned as an assistant women's basketball coach.

According to a sworn affidavit, a player McKey coached as an assistant at Xavier (of Cincinnati) said McKey asked her to come to his home in Covington, Kentucky, in May. She said during the evening, he repeatedly touched her inappropriately.

McKey has been ordered to stay away from her, and from Xavier's campus and events.
