It is good to see Patriotism alive and well in the Daviess County Public School system. Schools throughout the Daviess County Public Schools distirct are planning a variety of events to commemorate Veterans Day and express appreciation to the men and women who have served our country and protected our freedoms. The following are among the activities taking place in the  schools with the public invited to attend.

WLES Veterans Day program is planned for Friday, Nov. 4. Breakfast will be served at 7 a.m. and the program will begin at 8 a.m. The program features special singing performed by our fourth- and fifth-graders and the third-grade choir. Daviess County Sheriff Keith Cain will speak and will introduce a special tribute to Brandon Mullins, the young soldier from Daviess County who recently was killed in action in the Middle East.  An Apache helicopter is scheduled to make an appearance for our students and visitors to enjoy after the program.

The Social Studies department of BCHS will present a celebration of Veterans Day during morning and afternoon sessions on Monday, Nov. 7. Programs will begin at about 10:30 a.m. and at noon. Students will participate in a choral presentation of music, celebrating different branches of the service with several student and staff members participating. Students will also present duets of our National anthem. Apollo High School’s ROTC color guard will present the colors. Veteran family members of Beacon students and staff will be honored with an introduction at the assembly and lunch. A display of deceased and living veterans will be showcased in the lobby. A Presidential Proclamation honoring veterans will be read, along with several student compositions addressing the meaning and purpose of Veterans Day. Students have volunteered to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and a guest speaker will share a message.

Sorgho Elementary School will be hosting at Veteran’s Day program at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9. Our guest speaker for the program will be veteran Sheriff Keith Cain. The Apollo High School JROTC Color Guard and Drill Team will perform for our special event. The Sorgho Elementary School Choir will sing and Nolan Masteller will play “Taps” to end this special service. All veterans are invited to come and be our honored guests for this years’ Veteran’s Day celebration.

TES will celebrate America’s veterans and show appreciation for their dedication in keeping this nation “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” A Veterans Day Program will begin at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9. All veterans who are relatives of TES students are invited to join us for a reception and assembly. A Veterans March to the assembly begins at 1:15 p.m. with guest speaker Sheriff Keith Cain and special guests, Apollo AFROTC Color Guard. Tamarack students will present a special patriotic musical selection.

AES will honor our servicemen and women with a program at 1:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10. The program, titled “U. S. Constitution Reviver: Philadelphia,” will feature the signers of the Constitution as they are brought back to justify the decisions they made on the document. The program will also include an expression of appreciation to our veterans for the freedoms in our country as we discuss our Constitution. The program will also feature a slideshow of photographs of local veterans and family members of AES students and staff who have served in the military.

BES will honor veterans at a program beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10. Guest speaker is Sean Dysinger, CTR3, U.S. Navy. A special performance by the Burns Elementary Bobcat Chorus is planned, and each grade level will give a special presentation for the veterans. All veterans will be recognized by name, branch of service and connection to BES, if any.

MLES will produce a special musical, “History Alive: America’s Roots,” to honor our country’s heritage, service personnel, and veterans during two performances, at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10. The school will also feature a local representative from law enforcement as speaker and will honor visiting veterans. A segment highlighting the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on our country will be featured, as well as a special thank-you to firefighters, police officers, and health workers that have given so much during the times of crisis in our country. During the performance, which lasts about 40 minutes, fourth- and fifth-grade students will discuss the founding of our country, including the importance of our Constitution, the heritage of our folk songs and poetry,  and the contributions made by settlers and immigrants as our country expanded. Special costumes, lighting, and staging will enhance the presentation. The play is directed by Randy Thayer, music teacher. Costume director is Melinda Kuegel. Amy Bouchard and Alesia Thayer will also assist in staging. The public is cordially invited to attend.

In recognition of Veterans Day, WES will honor all who served our country in a branch of the armed forces with a special program on Thursday, Nov. 10. The program, titled “Defending Liberty and Freedom,” will begin with a luncheon at noon prepared especially for our veterans in our school cafeteria followed by a tribute ceremony at 1 p.m. All veterans and their families are invited to join us as we express our deepest gratitude and respect. After the luncheon, veterans will be escorted by students to their seats of honor in the school gym.  The tribute ceremony will officially begin with the flag presentation by Daviess County High School Color Guard, under the direction of Commander Stephen White.  The Pledge of Allegiance will be led by kindergarten student Micah Stone; and the National Anthem will be sung by fourth-grader Stella Fisher. Principal Cindy Appleby will bring greetings to our veterans and introduce our guest speaker, Keith Cain, Daviess County Sheriff and veteran.  A musical salute to Armed Forces and a slide show featuring veterans who are family members of our student body and staff will be shown.  All veterans in attendance will be introduced and presented with a commemorative ribbon, flag pin, and a poetry book containing patriotic poems written by WES fifth-grade students.  The student body and staff will pay tribute to our veterans by singing a rendition of “God Bless the U.S.A.” Closing remarks will be shared by Mike Gray, Interim Superintendent of the Daviess County Public Schools district. The benediction will be given by the Rev. Paul Hampton, pastor of Karns Grove Baptist Church. The WES program will close with a moment of silence in honor of Pfc. Brandon Mullins of Owensboro, followed by “Taps.”

BMS will hold their annual Veterans Day program at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10. The colors will be presented by the Apollo Air Force ROTC Color Guard.  The National Anthem will be sung by Madeline Dunlop, a BMS student. Donna Wethington, a former BMS teacher, will be the emcee of the event. Nick Hetman, a Navy veteran, will be the guest speaker. The BMS band, orchestra and chorus will perform patriotic songs.   Two BMS students will share what America means to them. Brian Jackson will perform a patriotic solo that will amaze the audience. The program will end with Mr. Little, the chorus teacher, playing “Taps” on the trumpet. Refreshments will be served for all guests in the library starting at 8:15 a.m.

Daviess County Middle School is honoring a very special veteran of the U.S. military as part of its 2011 Veterans Day Program at 8 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10. Sheriff Keith Cain is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, including a tour of duty in Vietnam.  He has served with the Sheriff’s Department since 1974. His career includes serving in the capacities of patrol deputy, chief deputy, and the chief of investigations. Can’s experience also includes extensive narcotics investigations, both in an undercover capacity and as case investigator. His police awards include numerous citations, letters of merit, and the American Police Hall of Fame’s “Silver Star for Bravery.” The program is open to the public; everyone is invited. Boy Scout Troop 120 will present the colors. The program will also feature the DCMS eighth-grade band: and a musical performance by sixth-grade student Ashlynn Dixon.

EVES third-graders will perform at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, with a special presentation of “Let’s Sing, America.” All veterans and their families are invited to attend. The third-grade class will sing five songs and recite poems they have written to honor veterans, and will share a brief history of the U.S. through the wars.

Highland Elementary will honor our veterans and learn of their courage and sacrifice during our Morning Buzz Show beginning at 7:40 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11. The school will gather to hear Deputy Paul Gatewood of the Daviess County Sheriff’s Department, who will sing for HES students and staff  and speak briefly about what Veterans Day means to him. The Highland Choir will perform patriotic songs.

SOES Veteran’s Day Assembly is Friday, Nov. 11. A free breakfast will be provided for all veterans. A program featuring SOES family members who are veterans of the U.S. military, along with a guest speaker and a performance of the SOES choir, begins at 8 a.m.

AHS Veterans Day program begins with breakfast at 7:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, followed by a program at 8:45 a.m. Guest speaker is Nick Hetman, a veteran of the U.S. Navy. This year we will be focusing our program on the “Families and Spouses” of the people in the military. We want to give them a round of applause for their support and things they do behind the scenes.

DCHS celebration is planned from 8:10 to 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11. Guest speaker is Sheriff Keith Cain. The DCHS Band will also play patriotic music as part of the program. Members of the DCHS faculty and staff who have served our country will be invited to step forward to stand by the flag representing their branch of service. Representatives from the local VFW Post No. 9 are special guests.
