The Daviess County Public Schools district is preparing to “set sail” into a new school year with an Opening Day ceremony scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, in the Daviess County High School gym. The school is located at 4255 New Hartford Road.

It’s “all hands on deck” as we extend a hearty “Welcome Aboard” to new Superintendent Owens Saylor, who will set the course as we navigate toward new horizons; as well as to all new and returning members of the DCPS crew.

The morning begins in the galley (lobby) at 7:30 a.m. as breakfast is served, followed by a high-energy program spotlighting the talents of DCPS staff and alumni. Master of ceremonies is Rod Kuegel, a graduate of DCHS whose wife recently retired as a teacher at West Louisville Elementary School and whose children graduated from Apollo High School.

The program will include a display of a ship with a sail created from a patchwork of pieces decorated by DCPS schools and departments. Highlights include artwork by West Louisville Elementary School using the pointillism technique, in which every student added a “dot” to create the design; and a picture painted by fourth-grade students at Whitesville Elementary School, which features the thumbprints of the school’s P1 students.

Musical selections include a performance of “God Bless America” by Elaina Norton, a first-grade student at Deer Park Elementary School; the National Anthem, performed by the DCHS Alumni Choir, directed by Shelia Miller; and “Anchors Aweigh,” performed by the DCHS Band of Pride, directed by DuWayne Dale.
