The aging  Elizabeth Munday Center is home to Daviess County Senior Citizens. In the past year of so several have voiced that a new center should be built. The call is for one that is new, modern and 60,000 sq. feet.

Others feel instead of one big center several smaller centers located around the county would better serve our aging population as they would not have to travel too far from home. The thought is that if things are close seniors will go to these centers more often.

Some have voiced the opinion that todays seniors are more active that those who came before them and a new center or centers need to be mulitpurpose and multigenerational  recreational facilities.

Then there is the question of where to locate a large facility. Some have suggested the Sportscenter area perhaps in the old National Guard Armory. Others say the heart of the senior population is not even near the Sportscenter but closer to KWC. Some say Hwy. 54 and others on 60 East near the new hospital.

It could be that all this discussion is useless since there is no money in any budget for such an expense. Still, should the funds ever become available it certainly would be nice to have our organizational ducks in a row.

Daviess County Judge Executive Al Mattingly and the folks at GRADD (Green River Area Development District) decided to fund and conduct a poll asking those 50 and over what they think.  The plan is to have 2,000 respondents.

The survey is short at only 16 questions but is asks some interesting questions.  What would you like to see at a new center? Do you currently attent a local Senior Center? What needs to be close? Will you need transportation provided? What hours are best for a Senior Center? What kind of activities are you interested in?

As you can see lots of questions are being asked. One of the most interesting is: Do you want intergenerational activities? If so what kind?

I hope those 50 and over will take this online survey in the next few days.

It is important, should we ever get the funding, that the decision makers and elected officials know and do what the citizens want if possible.
