Police in Colorado confirm 12 dead and 38 were injured during a midnight showing of the new movie "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora.

Authorities say the shooting started around 12:30 MDT, in front of one of the Century 16 Theaters at the Aurora Mall, as a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" began.

Witnesses say the gunman released a canister of some sort which started hissing and releasing a gas of some type and then opened fire on the unsuspecting crowd of movie watchers. Many people thought the gunfire was part of a movie being shown in a theater next door. Police have identified the suspect as James Holmes, 24, of North Aurora.

Police have not released a motive for the shooting.

Aurora, Colorado, sits just 10 miles on the outskirts of Denver, the capitol of Colorado.
