Memorial Day Weekend allows families to spend time doing what they love most.  Last year our family discovered a little piece of heaven about 45-minutes from Owensboro.

Shanty Hollow Lake is just outside of Bowling Green, Kentucky, at 1200 Shanty Hollow Road.  The trail is about 1.5 miles long and leads to a beautiful hidden waterfall.  Along the way, you can take pictures of the gorgeous sites including large rock structures, shallow streams with fish, and small caves.  The trail is narrow but so much fun.

Many people use the waterfall for rappelling.  From top to bottom of the fall it is about 150 feet.  When we visited the waterfall was not full compared to other photos I have seen.

If you are a boater Shanty Lake is 135-acres in size.  There were a ton of people out boating on Sunday when we walked the trail.

You are also able to bring your four-legged friends with you.  Layla loved the trail.  She literally smelled every single tree and footprint.  It was a chore though.

It really is a great place for the whole family to enjoy.   Make sure you bring extra shoes, a towel, and clothes.  We were all covered in mud by the end of the trek.

Here are some suggestions I have to make your visit fun:

  • Bring old towels, an extra change of clothes, and plastic bags
  • Pack a lunch or snacks in a backpack
  • Wear comfortable shoes and walking shorts
  • Take photos and lots of them.
  • Bug spray is a must!
  • Don't bring your dog LOL it was just a lot for her and us.
  • Don't be in a rush.  Take your time and enjoy the scenery.
