‘Chef’ Trailer: Jon Favreau Cooks Up a Spicy New Movie
After a decade of toiling away at big-budget blockbusters like 'Iron Man' and 'Cowboys and Aliens,' director Jon Favreau is returning to his independent roots with 'Chef.' The trailer for the summer release is has arrived and, if you'll pardon the terrible pun, it looks pretty delicious.
Favreau himself stars as a hotshot chef who quits a cushy restaurant gig to open a food truck with his family and friends. They take their mobile Cuban diner on the road and over the course of big road trip, everyone learns all kinds of important life lessons and consumes tons of delicious-looking food. And yes, it's no accident that Favreau cast himself as a superstar artist who gives up the big leagues to take on a smaller operation. If you directed 'Cowboys and Aliens,' you'd probably flee the four-star restaurant for the food truck, too.
'Chef' had its world premiere at this year's SXSW Film Festival, where it won over audiences and generated a ton of buzz (read our review here). Even in a crowded summer, it looks like the kind of counter-programming that could really win over moviegoers uninterested in (or tired of) explosions. Here's the official synopsis:
Chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) suddenly quits his job at a prominent Los Angeles restaurant after refusing to compromise his creative integrity for its controlling owner (Dustin Hoffman), he is left to figure out what’s next. Finding himself in Miami, he teams up with his ex-wife (Sofia Vergara), his friend (John Leguizamo) and his son to launch a food truck. Taking to the road, Chef Carl goes back to his roots to reignite his passion for the kitchen -- and zest for life and love.
'Chef' arrives in theaters on May 9, 2014. The supporting cast includes Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo, Dustin Hoffman and Robert Downey Jr.
