WHAT IS A LITTLE FREE LIBRARY?

Have you heard of the Little Free Library?  Here is what the national organization says it is;

Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that inspires a love of reading, builds community, and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world.

Studies show that children who do not have access to reading materials are academically three years behind those that do.  These libraries not only give children access to free reading materials but also adults.  Books are something so many of us take for granted.

HOW DO LITTLE LIBRARIES WORK?

Little Libraries have a great concept.  People donate books and you can take whatever you like.  If you are able to donate books back that is even better but you don't have to.  Anyone is welcome to donate books.

My kids and I have often cleaned their books at home out and taken them around to different little libraries in Owensboro and they love knowing they are helping other kids they get so excited.

APPROPRIATE BOOKS TO DONATE TO THE LITTLE LIBRARIES

There are multiple little libraries sprinkled all over Owensboro-Daviess County.  A lot of the schools have them right out front of the building.  We also have a few throughout the city; One at Smothers Park near the playground. One at Moreland Park.  One on 20th Street between Jr. Miller and Frederica Street, and one on Wintergreen Loop North on the West Side.

When donating think about the audience.  If it is at a school you want to donate books that the kids can read.  You could probably even donate books for teachers.

In the single little libraries throughout the city just make sure the books are appropriate and not too much for little eyes.  Children have access to all of these and we want to keep them safe.

We have noticed lately the little libraries have been bare in Owensboro.
