Before you know it, fall colors will be in full swing—and that’s the perfect time to explore all the beauty Illinois has to offer.

Parks, Pumpkin Patches & More

A ranking by Lawn Starter placed Illinois among the best states to visit in autumn, coming in 20th out of 48 states. The list was based on several factors, including fall foliage, scenic drives, and pumpkin patches.

Illinois stands out for good reason. It ranks 24th in the country for the number of weeks its fall foliage lasts and 7th for the number of state parks.

Top Scenic Drives Across Illinois

Outdoor enthusiasts will also appreciate that Illinois is 5th in the nation for outdoor activities, making it an ideal spot for autumn adventures. Here in Quincy alone, it seems weekends during the fall are always packed with festivals and events.

It’s surprising Illinois didn’t place higher—especially considering it’s the top pumpkin-producing state in the world. You’d think that would land us at least in the top 15. Meanwhile, California, famous for its year-round sunshine, claimed the number one spot—a choice that feels a little unfair for a fall-focused ranking.

Still, Illinois more than holds its own as a top destination for seasonal charm.
