The Road’s Jenny Tolman Talks About What We Didn’t See On TV And New Music
What Is The CBS Show The Road?
If you missed the hit country music competition show from CBS known as The Road, then jump on it and start streaming on Paramount+. If you're a country music fan, then you're missing out! Unlike other shows searching for a diamond in the rough, The Road is a competition for artists who are already established, but looking for their big break. Each episode consists of the artists performing one original song of their own and one cover song from their favorite artists. In fact, some of the originals you may recognize, as they were big hits for artists you may know. The talent was endless, and the originals were incredible! For me, Jenny Tolman was the winner, but unfortunately, she was sent home during episode 6. Jenny getting eliminated had nothing to do with her talent or abilities, but the fact that a specific rowdy crowd just wasn't feeling her that night. This is the beauty of The Road; it's very comparable to what real life as a touring artist is actually like, and needless to say, it's not easy!
Why Jenny Tolman Is My Favorite And Worth Checking Out
I love the concept of the show that allows these artists to play original music. When Jenny Tolman popped up in the first episode, my reaction was, "I know her! I have her music!" My personal favorite song of hers is called "High Class White Trash", with redneck lyrics reminiscent of Gretchen Wilson's "Redneck Woman". Here are some lyrics from the tune:
"Nothing like a sample of perfume at the bottom of a purse, to cover up the Pall Mall wreakin' from your shirt. Or a little Bloody Mary for a head full of hurt. Nothing like a fresh coat of lipstick painted on bright. And you can say the kinda **** that momma wouldn't like. Even makes a potty mouth seem lady-like."
While Jenny is not the in-your-face entertainer like many of the other contestants, her pitch-perfect delivery of covers, aligned with her stellar storytelling style of songwriting, has me thrilled for the next Jenny Tolman album! Her debut album, There Goes The Neighborhood, was released in 2021. Tolman performed several songs from this album on the show, including "Till My Tank Is Empty," the popular ode to her husband and perverbial love song requirement for any album. I love a good lyric, and the way Jenny composes her songs, it's one good lyric after another. Don't take my word for it, check out all things Jenny on her website. I was able to steal some of Jenny's time recently and asked her all the tough questions that have been on my mind since the show aired. Find out what we didn't see on screen, the details behind that wardrobe malfunction, and all about her new single in our interview below.
