Summer in Downtown Evansville just got a little more relaxed.

Officials have announced expanded hours for Evansville's Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area, commonly known as DORA, giving visitors more time to sip and stroll through downtown during June and July.

The Downtown Evansville DORA allows adults 21 and older to purchase alcoholic beverages from participating businesses and enjoy them while walking within designated downtown boundaries.

For June and July, DORA hours will run daily from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.

What Exactly Is a DORA?

A Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area allows customers to purchase alcoholic beverages from approved businesses and carry them outside to be consumed in the designated area.

However, there are a few important rules.

Drinks must be purchased from participating businesses licensed by the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission and served in an approved DORA cup. Outside alcohol is not permitted, and beverages must remain within the designated DORA boundaries.

The concept has become increasingly popular throughout Indiana, with more than 30 communities establishing DORA's to encourage foot traffic, support local businesses, and create a more vibrant downtown experience.

Evansville's First DORA

Evansville's DORA became official after the Evansville City Council unanimously approved the necessary ordinance in March 2025.

The Downtown Evansville Improvement District spearheaded the effort to create a more connected and walkable entertainment district while supporting local restaurants, bars, and businesses.

According to Downtown Evansville, this is the first DORA in the city, though Indiana law allows municipalities to establish multiple DORA districts.

Where Can You Grab a DORA Drink?

More than 20 downtown businesses currently participate in the program, including restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, and hospitality destinations.

Participating locations include favorites like Angelos, BRU Burger, Entwined Wine and Cocktail Bar, High Score Saloon, Patsy Hartigan's Irish Pub, Peephole Bar & Grill, Tiki on Main, Bally's Evansville Casino & Hotel, and several others.

Visitors can purchase beverages from participating establishments and enjoy them while exploring downtown shops, public spaces, events, and attractions located within the DORA district.

Know Before You Sip

While the program offers more flexibility, participants should still pay attention to the rules.

Only beverages purchased from participating businesses in approved DORA cups may be carried outdoors, and drinks must remain inside the designated district boundaries.

A map showing the DORA boundaries and a full list of participating businesses can be found on the Downtown Evansville website.

With warmer weather, outdoor events, and summer activities filling the calendar, downtown visitors now have a little extra time to enjoy Evansville's newest entertainment district amenity.
